Dance therapy is an experiential form of therapy, aimed at the treatment of psychological, mental and physical complaints. This form of therapy falls under the umbrella name of occupational therapy. Dance therapists work with dynamic forms of movement, such as dance, movement and play. Participants explore personal movement possibilities and explore new possibilities.
Through the use of (rhythmic) movement activities, dance therapy contributes to a good regulation of vital impulses such as breath and heartbeat, and to improvements in the regulation of motor skills. Dancing activities lead to the expression of inner experiences and support the release of emotional tensions. Dancing and moving with a partner or in a group appeal to non-verbal communication and social-emotional interaction.
